Nicki Minaj Covers ‘Teen Vogue’ June/July 2013
Nicki Minaj Covers 'Teen Vogue' June/July 2013

Nicki Minaj is fun and flirty on the cover of Teen Vogue‘s June/July 2013 issue.

Here is what the 30-year-old rapper and American Idol judge had to share with the mag:

On her rough childhood: “Every time my parents fought, my mother would have us move and I would have to go to a new school, which meant I’d have to face the task of making new friends. I dreaded it. I had butterflies in my stomach each time: Are people going to like or hate me? … Sometimes there’d be a fight, sometimes not. I let people know I wasn’t going to be pushed around.”

On the music business: “People treat this business like it’s high school. It can absolutely feel like one big popularity contest, and you know what? I can’t be bothered. I can’t allow myself to play ridiculous games with grown adults in the industry. I can’t be nice to someone just because they’re hot right now. I can’t do it.”

On social media: “I used to read the bad things people said about me. Then I asked myself, ‘Why am I reading that when I have millions of people saying great things?’ You cannot give negativity power. I tell teens, if you’re having a problem, there’s nothing wrong with deleting your social media. If people keep taunting you and you keep reading it, it’s poison.”

Nicki Minaj Covers ‘Elle’ April 2013
Nicki Minaj Covers 'Elle' April 2013

Nicki Minaj is nearly make-up free on the cover of Elle magazine’s April 2013 issue, on newsstands March 26.

Here’s what the 30-year-old entertainer had to share with the mag:

On her make-under for Elle‘s shoot: “When I saw myself with barely any makeup at, it was such a… like, I’m so, so attached to my pink lipstick, it’s hard. I feel that it’s become a part of me. To go in front of the camera, without pink lips or big ol’ crazy lashes- you know, nothing – I felt naked. It was scary! So this photo shoot was a real accomplishment in my eyes.”

On advice to women on how to command respect: “My advice to women in general: Even if you’re doing a nine-to-five job, treat yourself like a boss. Not arrogant, but be sure of what you want- and don’t allow people to run anything for you without your knowledge. You want everyone to know, Okay, I can’t play games with her. I have to do right by this woman. That’s what it’s all about.”

On world domination: “My goal in the beginning was to buy my mother a house. Now I realize, Okay, if I really focus and become a key player in business, then I can build an empire. I’m thinking of a legacy that I can be proud of and wealth that my grandchildren can use to go to college. So world domination- in terms of providing for my family – is absolutely my goal.”

Nicki Minaj & Mariah Carey Cover ‘The Hollywood Reporter’
Nicki Minaj & Mariah Carey Cover 'The Hollywood Reporter'

American Idol judges Nicki Minaj, Mariah Carey, Keith Urban and Randy Jackson take the cover of The Hollywood Reporter‘s latest issue.

Here’s what the judges, who shared the cover with host Ryan Seacrest, had to tell the mag:

Mariah, on deciding to do the reality show:
“I was on the fence about the whole thing. I got approached by all the shows. [Husband Nick Cannon] said I should do it because it’s the top, it’s the cream of the crop. And I felt like, ‘Do the show that’s produced massive stars who have had major careers.’”

Nicki, on the stigma of being on the show: “[There's] a judgmental culture in hip-hop…sometimes you are afraid of being too famous because it’s almost, like, is that even cool? Being that accessible, someone you see on TV every week? I never pictured myself as that type of person. I’m still surprised that I decided to do it.”

Keith, on contestant’s desires to win: “It shouldn’t be about fame or money. It should be your calling. This is what you do. You don’t have a choice.”

Nicki Minaj Covers ‘Elle’ May 2011
Nicki Minaj Covers 'Elle' May 2011

Nicki Minaj graces an alternate cover of Elle’s May issue, on newsstands April 12!

Here is what the 26-year-old rapper had to share with the mag:

On her career aspirations growing up: “I always wanted to play with the boys. I didn’t want to be a pawn in their game or have a sidekick role. I wanted to be more of a lead character—a superhero.”

On her sense of style: “I tend to like booties…[pause]”—she takes a beat to clarify: no sexual meaning implied—“and really flashy shoes: totally studded out, in five colors with an insane platform.”

On her song “My Chick Bad” with Ludacris: “[I] chose to do punch lines and be comical, to show how bad I am lyrically, as opposed to how sexy I think I am.”

Nicki Minaj: It’s Okay to Be Weird!
Nicki Minaj: It's Okay to Be Weird!

Nicki Minaj takes the cover of BlackBook’s latest issue.

Here’s what the 26-year-old rapper had to share with the mag:

On almost giving up her dreams: “I had no money, I had no one to call, and I was out on my own. I also had the burden of not wanting to tell my mother that I was out of a job, and could I come back home? Besides faith in God, the only thing that got me through that time was the fear of what would happen to my family if I didn’t make it. I remember thinking, I don’t know if this is ever going work but I’m going to give it one final try.”

On being compared to Lady Gaga: “We both do the awkward, non-pretty thing. What we’re saying - what I’m saying, anyway - is that it’s okay to be weird. And maybe your weird is my normal. Who’s to say? I think it’s an attitude we both share.”

On meeting men: “I’m not the type to be talking to a random dude in the club. Unless I know him, I don’t even want to be introduced to him, because it always turns into me being perceived as the ultimate whore-bag. I remember one time I saw a guy, someone famous, who was at one of my parties. I kissed him on the cheek and went to my seat, and they put up a story that me and him left together that night and went to a hotel.”
